Keep moving, nothing to see here.

I decided to put this blog back up for a little while since I was getting tons of e-mails almost weekly with turds asking if they were cool enough to "get an invite" even though this blog hasn't been active in over a year. I should have charged them. This is simply just for those people who still think this place has something to offer, which it does not.

Pruneface - Mystery Machine

Pruneface - Mystery Machine
(I wasn't planning on making a post here for awhile, and that is still the plan, but I know that there were a lot of people who have been looking for this release for a while now - so here is one for the road. Thanks to Vorticist for this rip. And I will see the rest you ungrateful bastards in a few months. P.S. Join the forums.) 10 minutes of Pre-Sexdrome Punk Rock from 2005. Grating, rasp vocals over bluesy riffs reminiscent of some Brainbombs material delicately laced with quick leads and even quicker paced percussive clutter drowning in lo-fidelity hiss. Teen angst done the Denmark way.

Taut - Fantasy Mapped in Blood

Taut - Fantasy Mapped in Blood
Sorry for the delay, I know a lot of you guys have been waiting for the re-upload of this. Too many problems in my real life, as well as problems with this blog made me put this in the background for awhile. But here it is, so you can stop e-mailing me for the link. Taut sounds like nothing you've heard on CW Productions, Taut sounds like nothing you've heard in general. Taut is unsettled and manic - baleful in the most genuine sense of the word. Taut shys away for the CW formula of fast and melody driven, prideful sounding Black Metal. Instead, here, Taut creates a sound on "Fantasy Mapped in Blood" which has a surrealistic essence without coming off as lame or laughable. The tracks are slow, beaten away at a torturous pace. The sound of discomposed howling segues into the cassettes descent, a human penumbra.

Unknown Artist - Untitled

Unknown Artist - Untitled
No fame, no recognition, just cold and monotonous Black Metal. "We simply don't care about protegonism, self reference, identities other shit like that. Black Metal is a tool for something greater, it is a mere process and not a way for self gratification." Bucketfulls of blastbeats and tremolo-picking sends this band, sonically, down the narrow corridor that most Black Metal bands wander. There is a subtle inversion, distinctiveness, in the way these guys do it by whirling up a foggy atmosphere by use of their seething stomping laced with fuzzy distortion and powerful vocal rasps and shouts. Cold, sharp and totally violent. Mixing, perfectly, old school Black Metal with Death and even Punk influences. This is a lethal mixture of the best underground, extreme genres. All 6 tracks on this CD are guaranteed to please any banger with its wickedly effective pandemonium.

El-Ahrairah - Tribute To Bathory

El-Ahrairah - Tribute To Bathory
Fans of this blog should remember this El-Ahrairah. They did a small batch of self-released cassettes about "Watership Down" that were quite amazing. (Search for it.) Now these guys have recorded a 3 track tribute to the great Bathory. The first two tracks are from the first S/T Bathory album while the last is culled from Under The Sign... (Oh, and look, the Goat has bunny ears...Watership Down....get it?) Every gimmick aside this is a great tape. It gets to the point and it does it quickly. The guitars showcase that buzzsaw, apocalyptic feeling that old Bathory were kings of. The killer blown-out grunts which form the vocals are a great addition. This doesn't belong in everyone's collection but if you love Bathory than check this one out.

Split - Volahn & Tukaaria

Split - Volahn & Tukaaria
I've heard better from Volahn. With that being said, their side of this cassette doesn't disappoint. It's a nod to fast paced first-wave Black Metal, especially the thrashier dirtier side of the old-school. Stormy guitars, blazing drum fills and blastbeats. Nothing more you could ask for. Tukaaria spills out nearly 12 minutes of headbanging Metal that traverses a lot of ground but, at its core, it reminds me of "Blood Fire Death," era Bathory especially when the clean vocals are exposed. They exude a chilling atmosphere and the gradually building blast of the war-drums spark memories. Nothing, by either band, is necessarily complex but they have a stunning aura about them.

City Bones - Dead Close

City Bones - Dead Close
4 lo-fi tracks for the tired and dejected. The changes in tempo are minimal, the vocals are low in the mix as doomful industrial textures of stinging guitar and sprung-metronome drums progress onward. Nihilist, obsessive, nevertheless built around thin rolling riffs, relentless crashing drums and monolithic layers of bedroom apathy.A few hooks will catch you off guard, i.e. the hip-shaking repetition of the finale. Torture Chain - Across Great Landscapes to a Legacy of Blood

Torture Chain - Across Great Landscapes to a Legacy of Blood
In between the "Mountains of Hate" and "Humbling Isolation Terror" the underrated American Black Metal band Torture Chain released a great 4 track tape that had somehow went unnoticed, under the radar. Expect the barbarous triumph shared by most of the traditional European Black Metal bands: wailing rasps, tremolo riffing that can change to slowed down Punk chords, and ambushing blasts with perfect pacing. But this traditional Black Metal formula is entwined with an original and primeval intensity (rare these days) creating an unpredictable atmosphere that only those with the ear and desire to conquer can do so. A document of power and aggression.

Ives - Abandon

Ives - Abandon
This piece of ordnance discharges a salvo of howitzer bursts leaving the weak in pre-dug graves. These three Soldiers choose from an armament of weaponry; grating rasp vocals heard over the loud speaking demanding submission, drums hammering away at machine gun blasts and Guitars leaking waves of sarin into the mouths of the cowards, burning up the throats of the already moribund, withering souls begging for clemency. Ives is a battalion that rushes through, destroys everything in its wake, and then moves on.

Hakaristi - Hakaristi

Hakaristi - Hakaristi
I am a Filth & Violence fan, a huge one. For some odd reason I almost always skip over their Metal tapes when purchasing anything from them. I own all of the Power Electronics/Noise releases in either cassette or mp3 format but I have zero Metal tapes and just a few mp3's. When I received this I was blown away. Hakaristi, which means Swastika in Finnish, delivers 6 short tracks (C10 cassette) of utterly strange galloping Black Metal laced with a very unsettling atmosphere. There is a tight rope walk between Black Metal and Power Electronics (not "Black Noise", I am talking strictly P.E. and if you need to know the difference maybe you should leave this one alone) but Hakaristi does it better than any other attempts I have heard to date and they even throw in a RAC flavor to some tracks. This is also the only other band (Ildjarn being the other) that can pull off a song with only one riff. This tape will make an example out of you.

Forgotten Spell - Desecrated Decayed And Still Holy

Forgotten Spell - Desecrated Decayed And Still Holy
That maniacally incisive label Parasyte Curse slobber out another fantastic release from Germany. The sounds of Forgotten Spell boast distinguished and skillful, obvious black metal compositions, and does not suffer from inexperience even though this is only their second Demo. This album carries itself through 9 fairly long tracks of blasts and howls, a tried and true formula for Black Metal, but Forgotten Spell's contorted riffs, in their dissonant complexity, and the variety of atmosphere from track to track leave no room for trite repetition. Forgotten Spell maintains the difficult task of holding fast to the strict and conservative rules of "true" Black Metal all the while establishing their own identity with ease. Malicious and raw tunes without punk influence, noise or embarrassing attempts at being "avant". Made for Black Metal purists.

Bilirubin - June 4th, 2010 Rehearsal

Bilirubin - June 4th, 2010 Rehearsal
Based loosely on the principles of the great Eisenwinter (namely his earlier releases, sans vocals) without being "worship", without being tribute. Buried melodic mushroom clouds rain down fractured and feverish hymns. 3 tracks have to lend themselves to a monolithic experience that is a slightly dulcet undercurrent rushing through an acrid central theme. There is an underlying attitude like a boot to your face and plenty of rawness, yet they burn buried melody as the smoke rises the scent of spirit-filled eloquence and sadism. Anthemic guitar lines manipulate their way to and from the odd sort of galloping drums that blend well with the overall dirge. Very few can compete with the atmosphere and force of such bands like Eisenwinter, Cirrhus and the like. Bilirubin invokes the aforementioned bands within their completely unorthodox climate which gives them an autonomous quality

Volahn - Live Ritual

Volahn - Live Ritual
Volahn has never let me down, and I am sure many of the fans of this blog feel the same way. Quality musicianship dialing in to an abundance of ominous moods that never waiver. You should all know these songs by heart, and if you don't you suck. Everything is from past releases but with a lot more speed and noisy, stalactite guitars build atmospheric walls that crumble quickly as to erect another with deliberate dynamic shifts in both rhythm and barren black laments. If there exists such a thing as perfect Kaos than Volahn has always known the recipe and works it into every piece of this album, even the vocals charge the alchemical sigils like a mantra. Curse of Greyface. (Rip and upload by UndyingGlare.)

Rhinocervs - Untitled (RH02)

Rhinocervs - Untitled (RH02)
Me and my old lady started fucking around in the middle of this album so it's a hard review for me especially the last two tracks, I'll have to come back to this one. In either case the first two tracks exhibit atmospheric French melody pinned down between quick and uncompromising blasts. Like Shakespeare started a Black Metal band. Expect a large review of this at the Pure Stench to make up for this shitty one.

Rhinocervs - Untitled (RH01)

Rhinocervs - Untitled (RH01)
A new label with two brand new, no frills, untitled tapes of Black Metal that cross pollinates old-school South American brutality with French atmosphere. This rare hybrid has failed before, with all of the Black Metal acts out there today it feels as if most just know how to do it mechanically while missing the target on originality, mood and content. This pair of untitled tapes hits all 4 while retaining a strong sense of minimalism and gangly technicality in wholly organic and original ways. The classically charged melodies are all ridiculously catchy contrasting the heavy and dark mood found through-out. A highly recommended piece of hypnotizing, dark ages beauty smashed up and thrown in the dirt. (Ripped by UndyingGlare)

Marching Church - At Night

Marching Church - At Night
Noisy and awkward Post-Punk, as if it wasn't an already awkward enough genre. For me this took a few plays to get rolling - high off the plateau of the amazing GrĂ¥ Fraktion LP I found it easier to digest this album fully, begin to enjoy it and thus bring it to the blog. This formula really shouldn't work, or it should only work in the most pretentious and lame art-scum style. But these guys pull it off perfectly; the gloom, the noise, the rawness, the tuneless vocals and Valium slow rhythms all mesh to form something unique. Posh Isolation has always known what they were doing so trust them with this one as well. If you don't like it delete it, no money lost.

Hallow - Hallow 2xLP

Hallow - Hallow 2xLP
Mr. McCoy of Youth Attack fame once again conjures elements of motion and texture by the use of blown-out bedroom Black Metal. Used to accompany his penciled art show last year in L.A. this double LP is a massive, sprawling atmosphere of sounds ranging from chaotic and fast to a slow torturous pace, each ebb and flow from one track to another. Gut-rumbling distortion and reverb is poured on the already sticky sounds with Mark's vocals sounding just as dirty as then ever before. This guy can release as many new projects as he wants but it sounds as if Hallow is him home in the Black Metal genre. This is meatier than any of his other BM projects but it is also tactile, more aggressive yet anxious.

Volcanic Slut - Blasphemaster

Volcanic Slut - Blasphemaster
Fast Death Thrash lingering on the outskirts of Black Metal, from members of Nazi Dust and Divisions, or so I am told. This band sounds like total destruction and mayhem of the dirtiest order, taking a good number of audible influences from early South American hellraisers and German drunks of yesteryear. The entirety of this rip is a hammering unholy communion of grim melodic old school hellish thrash rhythms and speedy ritual abuse. The Guitar tone is crisp and played at hyper speed, the drums are simple and effective and the Vocals range from quickly spouted off shouts to high pitched yelps. Awesome cover art too.

Unholy Crucifix - Scatosatyrical Slave Reh

Unholy Crucifix - Scatosatyrical Slave Reh
This is the first ever full band rehearsal for Unholy Crucifix, recorded in late August of this year (8/28/2010 to be exact). Bold guitar figures are evoked to visible appearance within the smog thick Riffs. The addition of a Bass player along with the crushing speed of the new drummer hlps to string this whole thing together and make for a great primitive rehearsal in the most demonic fashion. If you are a fan of unrelenting, satanic, "war" grinding, in your face sick death than this is your cup of tea. This is one of those types of albums where you have to say "Unholy Black FUCKING Metal" instead of simply Black Metal while describing it.

Capricornus - Alone Against All

Capricornus - Alone Against All
While I was posting the last Pogromnact release a thought popped in to my head telling me to post one of my personal favorite NSBM records even if it doesn't necessarily fit with the general sounds and theme of this blog. Fuck it though, it's my blog. Capricornus is a creation spawned by an ex-Infernum, ex-Graveland drummer. But this has little to no resemblance to any epic and blasting Graveland record. Instead there are 12 tracks of mid-paced hooligan Black Metal that seizes the prideful raggedness from RAC and Punk. I know a lot of you think of Akitsa or Absurd when someone hints at a Black Metal band having RAC undertones but this is different. There are no melancholic melodies or lead heavy tracks, Capricornus goes for the goose-step, Rock N' Roll styled RAC which makes for a nice change of pace every once and awhile. This thing has been out for 6 years but if you still don't have it I suggest you try it out.

Pogromnacht - KKK

Pogromnacht - KKK
People on the forums have been fiending for some more Saarland Noise Nazi trash (Blackmoon Warrior 88, Totenkopf Kommando, Resist ZOG, etc) and this is really the zenith of this very specific style. K.K.K. is a 5 minute piece of oddly paced feedback hell and static hiss swallowing a faint hint of half-formed yet melodious Black Metal with screeching vocals sewn into their surroundings. A nice shot at concocting a few rapidly refined ideas that may have been meant for the self-titled release I had posted about a year ago.

Pagan Youth - Demo

Pagan Youth - Demo
Typically I skip over all of the Punk and Hardcore material because I don't really care about most of it, but Pagan Youth was to hard ignore. The name alone contrasts one of my personal favorite Punk bands, Reagan Youth (although they sound nothing like one another). P.Y. is total garage shit and it is great. Drunken, spastic drumming and angry teenagers shouting about "fuck dolls" and knives. A very straight forward primal offering. Win/Win.

Time Crypt - Cruel Science

Time Crypt - Cruel Science
Another late Hospital cassette that I've been sitting on until the appropriate time. The story behind this rockin' tape is a good one, so sit down and let me tell you all how this came to be. Apparently the crew from Star Trek only had access to some Hellhammer tapes, the first few Possessed records and the early era Bathory because they forgot to pack any other albums and unfortunately there are no distros to order from while you're flying around stars. One day a few members of the crew decide that they should try and record a tribute to the Gods by playing some Metal based on these sounds which they are all so used to and mix it up with their own experiences of being involved in some deep sci-fi shit. This whole affair takes 1 whole light-year, which is about a week in our time. And even though they are flying around in the year 3008 (I have never watched Star Trek so someone correct me with the year if they are nerdy enough) they somehow only have a four-track with them, which actually helps in the end by adding some authentic, hot raw fuzz to this cyberpunk space opera Blackened Thrash attack. The tape is done, rad shit indeed, and then... swoosh! The black guy with the crazy forehead drops the demo into the time machine and it somehow ends up in the year 2010 in the city of New York where some guy who doesn't wear shirts picks it up and releases it on his label. Now you can all have it. Live long....

Waste - Demo

Waste - Demo
For that very isolated pocket of people who actually download my "Noisecore" rips here is one from Canada's one man group Waste who will provide you with a strong dose of heavily fuzzed out Noisecore that should tide you over for the time being. This Demo slips between slow and torturous rattling augmented by Noise, to quick, grinding Noisecore blasts effected to shit as to accentuate its dirty charm. If you can imagine the stomping madness on the second Sadistic Bliss demo tape mixed up with Tortured Hooker you can get a somewhat clear picture of what to expect.

Luciation - Occultious Inlightmentsasion

Luciation - Occultious Inlightmentsasion
Four. That is the number in between 3 and 5, it is also the number of albums that Denmark's Luciation spawned in the last year. Building up momentum with two great Posh Isolation releases, we now see an up-and-coming label by the name of Nightmare Life carrying the torch (nice choice for a debut guys). On this swift seven track bulldozer Luciation leaves you in a wash of hypersonic blasting and fuzzed-out riffing. The production is just a bit more sterile than previous cassettes so you can hear every grating shout, gurgle and drum fill. For the new comers I would tell them to think Apocalypse Command, Nyogthaeblisz and Beherit demo's. Raw. Bestial. Filth. (Rip from tenebracid.)

Terrorism - Skyguide

Terrorism - Skyguide
4 Untitled tracks consisting of gruff to shrill screams descending into rumbling electronics, fleeting drum hits and distorted, overdriven electricity the source of which is kind of hard to discern (probably a Guitar). The blasting drums and guitar wankery offering a bird’s-eye view of the twisting pit separating lucidity from the magnetic lure of fucking-losing-it. Everything is rightfully unsettling. It is fast from beginning until the final act (my favorite) where we are allowed to witness the longest, clocking in at almost 7 minutes, track on this Demo. It begins with a strangely clear drum fill, rattling cymbals rise and fall, floating and drifting, seeping into the atmosphere as a hissing ring integrating with spoken, almost chanted vocals that occasionally break into a scream upon bouncing tones and tectonic noises. It's a good come-down to a great tape. I sincerely hope to hear more from this project.

Wolven Howl - Wolf of Blackdeath

Wolven Howl - Wolf of Blackdeath
The Hearse did a good expose of sorts on Korean Black Metal and I think he hammered the nail in the coffin about as deep as one can go. Therefore, this reiew will be a bit short. Wolven Howl is the noisiest of the Korean "cricle" called the Nerbilous (also the name of their DIY label). For the most part Wolven Howl plays a deep and chaotic brand of noise-laden Black Metal, but if you peek under the hood you hear tin leads and gruff vocals dying in the murk. The noisy prodction, the guitar work and the drumming are all an endlessly spiraling Noise assault. This will not be everyone's favorite, but I think everyone will take something they like from it.

Night Sins - Demo Tape

Night Sins - Demo Tape
What's this? I didn't think I would like anything about this tape, but after a few spins it grew on me (very slowly I might add). There are an abundance of jangly guitars playing simplistic "mod-revival" beats (The Jam?) with a simple '77 Punk sound. The jury's still out on whether funky will ever make a significant impact within Punk, but Night Sins take that progression and grooms it to fit into some strange dream. There are hints of subtle Gothic/Post-Punk undertones bubbling below Pink Floyd's more rockier material with Glenn Danzig circa Samhain on Vocals. Weird shit, possibly the weirdest I have put up on this blog. Maybe this is what schizos think from thought to thought. NOT METAL. NOT NOISE.

Raw Moon - Demo

Raw Moon - Demo
Raw Moon plays a relentless and unusually catchy style of Black Metal that manifests obvious hardcore influences every time you look. The recording quality is clear which is good in this case, everything is perfectly audible while also maintaining a razor-like sound. 8 minutes of variously paced tunes that leave you with very little breathing room - fast but not neck breaking, melodic but still aggressive. Cold and brute vocals rounded off with quick riff progressions and a steady push of blasting drums that brings out an intriguing crash to the overall Demo. Excellent performance from each member.
